There are many myths and misconceptions in the worlds of SEO and marketing which leads to many mistakes. The problem is that we are talking about fields that are rapidly developing so even if you had the right formula 6 months ago, doing the same today might not be as successful (might even be the other way around). That’s why I decided to summarize some of the most common mistakes people make today when it comes to SEO and online marketing.
#5. Spinning Articles
At one point, when trying to optimize their sites better, people thought that presenting the same information over and over again would create a beneficial online environment for their website to grown and prosper. The way this works is you write something, and then rewrite it with slightly different words, or in in other words retell the same story in a different manner, or otherwise saying the same thing with a changed lexicon (and so on and so forth, you get the picture). As you can imagine, people didn’t want to read this kinds of cloned texts but many sites got to Google’s top results using this method. However, everyone knows Google is about quality and when it became clear that dishonest means are used to artificially boost a site’s rating, Google decided they wouldn’t just sit idly by while all of this was going on. Thus, a few updates later, the problem was solved. Many of the sites that had crawled to the top suddenly fell off just as quickly.
The problem is that many people still don’t know the ineffectiveness of this tactic and that even though it’s not copied content, spun articles don’t bring anything new to the table, and Google won’t have it.
#4. Intrusive Ads
Commercial breaks have always been the most annoying part of watching TV. Even though it’s
the main source of revenue most ads are universally hated. This hatred moved to the Internet, as well, which is why most sensible people use adblocks. Sometimes outbound marketing can do more harm than it’s worth. However, intrusive ads are obviously here to stay, which why people will continue finding ways to block them or ignore however they can.
#3. Bad anchor text
When linking to a certain website or web page, make sure you use the appropriate anchor text (the words you are using to create the hyperlink). Bad anchor text can have severe effects. If you want to link to a website about, say, selling action figures, then don’t use the words “looking outside†(or another random combination of words). You want your anchor text to be good and original, because it matters, and it matters more than you think.
#2. Bad content
Both for SEO and marketing, having badly written texts can potentially be disastrous. Whether it’s a bad sales copy or a blog post, if the text is bad, boring or filled with grammatical errors, it might cause people to lose interest and leave your site. How much time a user spends on your site also matters. The more time people spend browsing around, the more traffic and the better rating you get. A bad sales copy can also completely lose a potential client. Google values quality over quantity, and so do people.
#1. Lack of adaptation
As I’ve already said, the rules changes drastically and it’s just a matter of time before they change again. All you have to do is keep adapting to the changes, reading about updates, new trends and requirements and you will be fine with these changes. But if you think that just because what you’re doing now gives you the results you’re looking for things will continue to work out, you’re gravely mistaken.
